Science kits are a fantastic way to introduce kids to the wonders of the world around them. They combine hands-on learning with fun, turning curiosity into discovery. Whether you’re raising a future scientist/engineer or just want your kids to have some screen-free fun, these kits offer an engaging gateway into STEM. As a parent and science teacher, I have purchased my fair share of science kits and subscription boxes and have listed some of my all-time favorites below. So, in no particular order, and in no way sponsored, here are my top picks.
The Magic School Bus Science Kits
The Magic School Bus series brings Ms. Frizzle’s wild adventures to life through interactive science experiments. Setting aside the fact that Ms. Frizzle is the inspiration for all that I do, these kits are ideal for elementary-age children, blending fun themes with real-world science. I think my kids and I have done ALL of the kits in the series and some of our favorites are discontinued (like travel back in time to dinosaurs with the cool dinosaur skeleton) but there are some fantastic kits made by the Magic School Bus!
- Secrets of Space: Budding astronauts can explore the cosmos with activities like building a constellation box or creating their own solar system model.
- Human Biology: Dive into the science of the human body with experiments on digestion, the five senses, and the circulatory system. Added bonus: the human skeleton that comes with this kit has been retired as a teaching aid and made it's way into our Halloween decorations.
- Jumping into Electricity: This kit teaches kids about circuits and static electricity in a safe, hands-on way, using simple materials to create exciting results.
The Magic School Bus kits stand out for their colorful instructions and their ability to break down complex topics into kid-friendly lessons. You don't need to watch the show or read the books to truly enjoy these!
National Geographic Science Kits
National Geographic is a household name and brand that has been offering top-notch educational materials for decades. They have a ridiculous number of science kits available ranging from digging out geodes, and growing crystals, to microscopes and spy science kits. We have tried more of their kits than I count but my two favorites are their basic chemistry sets. I like these because of the broad topics covered. While many of these experiments can be easily done at home without the kit, I appreciate how neatly packaged everything is and how easy it is to follow their instructions and get discovering!
- Science Magic: This kit combines the thrill of magic with the principles of science. Kids can make a coin float, create color-changing solutions, and more, all while learning the science behind the tricks. My kids love magic and science, so it's the best of both worlds!
- Stunning Science: Packed with experiments that amaze and educate, this kit covers chemical reactions, crystals, and even slime-making. I love it as an introduction to chemistry and all it's wonders!
National Geographic kits excel at providing a mix of education and entertainment, making them a hit with kids and parents alike.
Steve Spangler Science Kits
Steve Spangler is a favorite science icon for many young students. His educational materials bring exciting experiments to your kitchen table with little preparation.
- Insta-Snow: This kit creates realistic, fluffy snow in seconds using a superabsorbent polymer—a fun and safe introduction to chemistry.
- Energy Stick Kit: Teach kids about circuits and conductivity with this simple yet captivating tool that lights up when you complete the circuit. Some of my science club students used this energy stick to conduct their science fair projects!
- Mentor Geyser Kit: Perfect for outdoor fun, this kit helps kids create a spectacular soda geyser while learning about gas expansion and pressure.
These kits are ideal for hands-on learners and are especially popular for science fair projects or group activities.
Science Subscription Kits
For families who want an ongoing science adventure, subscription kits deliver new experiments every month.
- KiwiCo: Known for its variety of age-specific crates, KiwiCo offers STEM-focused projects that inspire kids to build, tinker, and explore. From engineering marvels to creative chemistry, there’s a box for every budding scientist and can grow with your child over time. We absolutely loved our kiwi crates for years and years and still take out some of our favorite creations from time to time to play with them (especially our Winter kits - which serve as holiday decor as well).
- Crunch Labs: Founded by YouTuber Mark Rober, Crunch Labs focuses on engineering and problem-solving through fun, buildable projects like chain-reaction machines and spinning tops. These are great for students who have exhausted the typical at-home chemistry and building kits.
Subscription kits ensure that science stays fresh and exciting, providing regular opportunities for discovery. I love having surprise science projects brought to my doorstep every month!
Science kits are more than just toys—they’re tools for lifelong learning. From single-topic kits like the Magic School Bus labs to subscription options like KiwiCo, there’s something for every interest and age group. These kits spark curiosity, build confidence, and turn everyday kids into little scientists. So grab a kit, get hands-on, and keep discovering!
